LATEST HEARTFELT FEBRUARY NEWS
Below are some of the things we will be doing in the classroom during this month.
1. The fourth grade students in my Language Arts classes will be taking the 2016 STAAR Released Writing test on February 13th. This test will be used to address any reteaching skills for revising/editing and composition organization.
2. Our classroom Valentine's party will be held on Thursday, February 14th from 1:15-2:00. This will be an ice cream sundae party with all the toppings & sharing of Valentine's cards. All parents are welcomed to join in the fun for our party!!!
To prepare for the passing out of the Valentine's cards, students will be working on their Valentine's boxes at home. They will need to bring their decorated box to school by Monday, February 12th. We will have a contest in the morning of February14th to see who will take first place in each of five judging categories. More information about the judging categories will go home at the beginning of February.
The winners will receive five homework passes for one homework in Language Arts whenever they wish to use it!
3. Parents will be notified in advance if this testing is given to fourth graders at OHE on Wednesday, February 1, 2017.
NAEP testing will be held on our campus for a randomly selected group of fourth graders, (the selection of sts. to be tested is done by the U.S. Dept. of Education), on (). The testing will take approximately 1 1/2 hour and will focus on a specific subject area. Here is some information regarding this testing: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), otherwise known as The Nation's Report Card, informs the public about the academic achievement of elementary and secondary students in the United States. Report cards communicate the findings of NAEP, a continuing and nationally representative measure of achievement in various subjects over time. The Nation's Report Card compares performance among states, urban districts, public and private schools, and student demographic groups. NAEP is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and has been conducted since 1969.
3. A Parent/Teacher conference day scheduled for President's Day, Monday, February 20, 2017 (a student holiday). This conference day will be on a request basis only....however, a conference may be requested by Mrs. Alonzo if deemed necessary.
As we move through the days in this nine weeks, we will continue our learning with focus on the following:
Reading: Comparing expository text and fictionial text. Stories that will be read during February: The Life and Times of the Ant and A Cricket in Time Square.
Writing: Expository prompt writing using a 5 box graphic organizer for prewriting the introduction, three supporting detailed paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Social Studies: The first Spanish Missions in Texas.
